God finds faith attractive
In 1 Timothy 1:4 Paul encourages Timothy to avoid arguments over technicalities, discrepancies and genealogies that people tend to bicker about. His reasoning is that these kinds of discussions promote controversy rather than God’s work, which he adds is by faith.
If God’s work is established by faith then we need to step back a moment and look at our walk with God and our service on His behalf to ensure that it faith filled. There are many lessons from scripture that show people employing great effort without finding God’s approval because they were in unbelief. We cannot substitute faith with more unbelieving works. This I suspect is what the book of Hebrews would call "dead works". God works through faith and in its absence He cannot be pleased.
Hebrews 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
So the ongoing call of the gospel is to remain in faith. It is a message that requires faith from its very first moment to its last (Romans 1:17), in fact one of the most often quoted scriptures from the Old Testament is that the righteous person must live by faith (Romans 1:17, Romans 3:22, Romans 4:5-9, 11, 13, Romans 9:30, Romans 10:6, Galatians 3:11, Philippians 3:9, Hebrews 10:38).
As Israel learned when trying to enter the promised land, walking into the inheritance God has promised can not be done by the effort of will, but by acts prompted by faith in the God who made the promises.
Hebrews 4:2 For we have heard the good news of deliverance just as they did, yet they didn’t join their faith with the Word. Instead, what they heard didn’t affect them deeply, for they doubted. 3 For those of us who believe, faith activates the promise and we experience the realm of confident rest! - The Passion Translation
God is on the lookout for people who have faith. He is drawn to them, their faith is attractive to Him. With them He can establish His kingdom’s plans. Lets make up our minds to be those kind of people.
