Growing strong in spirit 3 - Praying in tongues
Ephesians 6:10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.
When we unite ourselves with the Lord we become one with Him in spirit (1 Corinthians 6:17). God’s Holy Spirit takes up residence in us and our spirits have become the most holy place where God lives (1 Corinthians 6:19). We now have access to all of the manifestation gifts of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:7). One of these is the ’gateway gift’ of speaking in tongues which is the ability Holy Spirit gives us to speak in a language our minds have not learned or mastered. This flow of language bypasses our minds and flows directly from our spirits.
1 Corinthians 14:2 For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit.
As these languages come from the Holy Spirit through our spirits they are not understood by our minds and it is normal for someone to be able to pray, sing or speak in a tongue without engaging their minds. Paul uses the phrase my mind is unfruitful to describe this reality. To address this Paul suggests that when we are praying in tongues we should also engage our minds in prayer and if we are worshipping using tongues we should also engage our minds in worship.
1 Corinthians 14:14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. 15 So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my understanding; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my understanding.
As the speaking in tongues is usually the first of the gifts of the Holy Spirit people experience we must expect that tongues is the gift that strengthens our spirits so that we can function in all the other gifts as well. Paul says that we will be strengthened when we speak in tongues and in fact boasted that when not in church services he spoke in tongues more that anyone.
1 Corinthians 14:4 Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves, but the one who prophesies edifies the church. . . . 18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.
When we engage in speaking in tongues either praying or worshipping we are strengthened by tongues because it is the flow of the Holy Spirits power through our spirits. When we want to grow strong in spirit the practice of tongues is an important part of that development.
Jude:20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of GodWe can participate in building ourselves up by praying in the Holy Spirit.
Developing a familiarity with the flow of the Holy Spirits voice and perceptions in our spirits is a great thing for believers. Make up your mind to engage with the manifestation gift of tongues. It will train and develop and strong spirit within you.
While you’re alone practicing speaking in tongues and then ask the Lord for the interpretation of what you just said.
