It is written!
“Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ” Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written: “ ‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’ ” Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’ ” Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.”Matthew 4:1-11 NIV
In this passage of scripture, we find Jesus in the wilderness being tempted by the enemy. The devil goes after His identity (if you are the son of God), His anointing (turn these stones into bread) and His inheritance. (all this I will give you if you worship me) The truth is Jesus identity was settled as a beloved son, His anointing was secure because of who He was and He already owned all the kingdoms of the world. Every time the devil comes at Him with temptation, Jesus says“ it is written” or “ it is also written.” Jesus counters him with the word.
The word of God settled in our hearts and coming out of our mouths is a weapon of destruction against the enemies lies and temptations. We too can say it is written! When the enemy tries to tempt us with fear we say, “it is written, I have not been given a spirit of fear”. When he waves anxiety in our face we say, “it is written, perfect love drives out fear and the Prince of Peace lives in me!” 1 John 4:18. When he lies to us and tell us God is giving us sickness to teach us a lesson we say, “it is written, He took all my sickness upon his body and by his wounds I am healed.” Isaiah 53:5. When he whispers, “You can’t make good decisions, we say “it is written, I have been given a sound mind” 2 Timothy 1:7.
You and I are responsible to make sure there is enough money in our spiritual bank accounts so that we can make withdrawals when needed. The Bible tells us that the word of God is powerful and effective, sharper than a double edged sword, but our sword is only as powerful in our lives as we choose to wield it. A super sharp knife that only lies in the drawer isn’t effective until we wield it. But when we do, it has amazing efficacy!
There have been times in my life when the word of God in my heart is the very thing that has sustained me. When things are looking tough and don’t make sense, I go back to the promises the Lord has spoken over me through his word and through other people. These verses are anchors that encourage me and have kept me from sinking. They are also a sword in my hand to counter the lies of the enemy.
Let’s keep our ‘word’ accounts full so that we always have truth to withdraw and stand on. Declare His word, write it down, memorize it and keep it in front of you always!
“My (child) son, attend to my words; consent and submit to my sayings. Let them not depart from your sight; keep them in the center of your heart. For they are life to those who find them, healing and health to all their flesh.”Proverbs 4:20-22 AMPC
