Jesus planned for you to reign in life.

Ephesians 6:10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.

We have physical bodies that are created with natural faculties, and our spirits have abilities that are innate as well. We are beings created to function in both the physical and spiritual worlds. These abilities are built, by design, in each human spirit. If we recognize them and develop strong spirits, we will function in these areas effortlessly and see the kingdom of Jesus made manifest in our lives. Just as our physical bodies have senses, our spirits have natural abilities, as well. Here are some of them:

1. Discern

Our spirits have a natural capacity to discern, both in the natural and supernatural. Our spirits discern evil and good. We can discern human spirits as easily as evil spirits or angelic beings. With this natural function, we can walk into a room and sense the mood. Sometimes, we sense the presence of evil or sense the presence of the Lord.  These are demonstrations of the ability of our human spirit to discern things not revealed to our other senses. Sometimes, when talking with someone, we feel repelled by them as though something unclean is on them even though they may look perfectly respectable on the outside. Although this is not an infallible judge of character and should not be used to publicly accuse people, it is nevertheless often a first warning from our spirits that all is not well. How often have we heard believers looking back on an event say something like, “I should have listened to the warnings, something was off.” Those warnings and senses come from our spirit's ability to discern what the eyes and ears missed.

2. Receive

Our spirits are the faculty by which we can hear God’s inner voice. Additionally, our Spirits are designed to receive other graces, refreshing, peace, joy, knowledge, or wisdom. The Holy Spirit indwells us, and we can receive His guidance at any stage. He downloads spiritual blessings into our spirits. This kind of receiving from God is a natural and spiritual event. Many have received immense peace in testing times that defies the situation or logic. Often God can encourage us or stir our faith by a download into our spirits.

3. Relate

Like lying down on a soft bed at the end of a long day, or sitting in a shady seat away from the heat, our spirits are designed to be refreshed as they commune with God. Our spirits have a wonderful capacity to fellowship and share a moment with God. The walks in the "cool of the evening” that Adam and Eve enjoyed are still available to us when we learn to fellowship with the Holy Spirit. Our spirits were created to connect and relate to God. Many years ago when the Soviet and American space stations sought to dock, it was discovered that they did not have the same space-docking mechanisms. A module was built that docked on the one side to the Soviet spacecraft and on the other it docked to the American spacecraft. Our spirits are like that docking station. They can relate to things in the heavenly realms and they can relate to the things our minds and bodies are saying in the physical realm. Do not believe the lie that you cannot connect with God. Your spirit was made to do just that.

4. See

Another function of our spirits in spiritual sight. This may take the form of a mental image that comes to mind and persists which is the most common experience, or even as impactful as a trancelike state that Peter, Abraham, Adam, Isaiah, Ezekiel, Daniel and countless others have experienced. Some have even been caught away in a vision like a waking dream. Paul prayed for the eyes of our hearts to be enlightened. You were designed to see in the spirit.

5. Perceive

Sometimes your spirit will perceive what people are thinking. Jesus often knew His audience’s thoughts. Many times people who have eagerly desired manifestation gifts will perceive things that God is saying or doing in people’s lives. This gift provides constant confirmation of the Spirit’s heart and encourages all who notice. This is great for prayer purposes or when you desire to encourage others.

Colossians 2:5 For though I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit and delight to see how orderly you are and how firm your faith in Christ is.

1 Corinthians 5:3 –4 Even though I am not physically present, I am with you in spirit. And I have already passed judgment on the one who did this, just as if I were present. When you are assembled in the name of our Lord Jesus and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present,

6. Rule

Our spirits are designed to be strong and to have dominion over our minds and bodies. This governing ability of a strong spirit forms a monitor for our daily lives. A person with a strong spirit can lead his body and mind to do things that a person with a weak spirit cannot.

Proverbs 18:14 A man's spirit sustains him in sickness, but a crushed spirit who can bear?

Psalm 51:12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. What a great gift this is. It gives us clarity to know the difference between the Holy Spirit and other spirits while we seek the Lord for the wisdom to know what to do with each.

Practical application

Ask the Lord to tell you something about a person you are interacting with that is hidden from your five natural senses. Pray for them about that issue, and if an opportunity arises to speak with them about it, tell them you were compelled to pray for them on that issue.
